Teach Your Child To Be Responsible

Teaching your child to be responsible is one of the best gifts you can give them. If children stay home and don't get involved in anything they will not learn what responsibility is. It might be easier to have your child not help clean the house because you think they will not do it as well as you and you can do it faster. You may not encourage them to join a sport or club because you fear that they won't do it well or stay interested. If you don't let your child take on these functions in their life they will not learn to be responsible. They need to learn these skills early on and carry them through their growing up. You will find that a child that has responsibilities when he or she is young turns out to have better self esteem and is more successful in their adult life.

Because teaching your child to be responsible is a big part of good parenting we have to look for ways we can help them. When your child is very young just working on having them pick up their toys when they are done is a great way to start helping them become responsible. You could even have them put away the thing they are playing with before they take the next toy out. After your child is a little older, it is good to have a list of chores for each kid to accomplish either daily or weekly. Having this written on paper and giving a deadline helps you to not have to keep repeating yourself and they can cross it off the list as each chore is completed. Keeping this list in a place that is frequently looked at is good, like the refrigerator would be a good spot to keep it on. Giving them chores to do around the house makes you work better as a family and teaches them that their part in the family is important.

All children love pets and if they don't have one they might be begging you to get them one. Having your child participate in taking care of pets is very important. It shows them how to care for someone else and how hard that can be.

Learning good social skills is important for your child. You need to allow them to make choices in their life and they need to know after they have made that choice to live with the outcome. They need to know that when they make good choices they will be rewarded and when their choices are bad they will be punished. Responsibility is something every child should be taught and one that is not very hard to teach if we try.
